Position Summary
PVInsight is seeking a motivated Trainee Engineer – High Voltage (HV) Engineering to support the engineering and design of substations, interconnection facilities, collector substations, and high-voltage electrical infrastructure associated with utility-scale renewable energy projects.
Working under the supervision of experienced engineers, the successful candidate will assist in preparing engineering calculations, construction drawing packages, equipment layouts, technical documentation, and multidisciplinary project coordination activities while developing a strong foundation in power system and high-voltage engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in preparing engineering calculations, technical reports, drawings, schedules, and project documentation for high-voltage electrical projects.
- Support the development of substation layouts, equipment arrangements, grounding systems, and electrical design packages.
- Assist with preparation and review of single-line diagrams (SLDs), three-line diagrams, protection and control drawings, wiring diagrams, and equipment schedules.
- Support cable sizing, grounding calculations, voltage drop calculations, equipment loading evaluations, and quantity take-offs under supervision.
- Review engineering inputs, vendor documentation, equipment datasheets, and manufacturer drawings for completeness and consistency.
- Assist with preparation of bills of materials (BOMs), equipment specifications, and construction deliverables.
- Perform documented self-checks and support quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) reviews.
- Coordinate with Power System Studies, Solar PV, BESS, Civil, Structural, and Transmission Line teams to support multidisciplinary project execution.
- Maintain organized project records and follow document management procedures.
- Participate in project meetings and communicate progress, technical questions, and potential risks to project leads.
Areas of Technical Exposure
The Trainee Engineer will gain experience in:
- Utility-scale substations and collector substations.
- High-voltage and medium-voltage electrical systems.
- Bus configurations, switchgear, breakers, disconnect switches, and instrument transformers.
- Power transformer applications and auxiliary system design.
- Single-line diagrams, protection and control schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Grounding and lightning protection systems.
- AC and DC station service systems.
- Equipment layouts, cable routing, trench layouts, and raceway design.
- Protection and control system interfaces.
- Utility interconnection requirements and grid infrastructure.
- Review and application of equipment data from transformers, relays, breakers, switchgear, and associated HV equipment.
- Electrical design in accordance with applicable codes and industry standards, including NEC, NESC, IEEE, ANSI, and utility requirements.
- Coordination with Civil, Structural, Power System Studies, Transmission Line, Solar PV, and BESS teams.
- Engineering quality management and design validation processes.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree (B.S. or B.Eng.) in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
- 0-1 years of relevant engineering experience.
- Recent graduates with internship, co-op, research, or project experience in power systems, substations, renewable energy, or utility infrastructure are encouraged to apply.
- Basic understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals and three-phase power systems.
- Familiarity with power system equipment and high-voltage electrical concepts.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Internship or project experience involving substations, power systems, utility infrastructure, renewable energy, or electrical design projects.
- Exposure to utility-scale Solar PV, BESS, transmission, distribution, or substation projects.
- Familiarity with NEC, NESC, IEEE, ANSI, and utility design requirements.
- Understanding of protection and control systems, electrical equipment ratings, and grounding principles.
- Experience preparing engineering calculations, technical reports, or construction drawings through academic coursework, internships, or research projects.
- Familiarity with electrical analysis and substation design software.
Technical Skills
Preferred familiarity with:
- AutoCAD
- ETAP
- CYMCAP
- Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite
- Bluebeam Revu or equivalent PDF review software
- Engineering document management systems
Expected Proficiency:
Ability to learn and apply PVInsight engineering workflows, quality management procedures, utility standards, and project tools while producing accurate and reliable work under technical supervision.
